Food is our common ground, a universal experience. - James A. Beard Our Restaurant"Nonna's", an endearing term for Grandmother, and "Cucina", Italian for kitchen led me to name our restaurant after my Grandmother, Concetta "Lena" Bongiovanni Sartiano who has given me the knowledge to creating her dishes that I grew up on as well as the ability to create sophistication from basic Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. My Mother, Frances Marie Bongiovanni, was the driving force behind our opening. My Mother owned a restaurant, "Francie's" with her Mother where they made homemade pizza, pasta, root beer and wine that was sold out of the front of their home in Johnstown, PA. This has been a dream of mine and my Mother to recreate the simple dishes that we all grew up on as well as adding the sophistication of Mediterranean fare that most people don't even realize exists...there are 20 regions in Italy alone and the fare varies greatly from one to the other as well as one household to another. |
